Medievals against Sylvan Elves
Wolfgang vs Thane, 3400 points
back to main battle report page

This was a very close battle fought between Wolfgang's (of the Magic Brush painting service) Medievals and my Sylvan Elves. Wolfgang has the most eclectic collection of figures of anyone I know, and I can't tell you where he got his figures from. This was my Woodelf army from when I suffered through WHFB 5th edition, and most of the figures are GW's. The exception are the spearmen, which are plastics from Fortress Figures, and some of the characters and the bear, which are from Reaper. Oh, and the bows on my right flank, which are from Harlequin, which has a great line fo sylvan elves which look a lot wilder than the punk rocker wood elves from GW.

I made up stats for the GW Dryads, Wood Spirits of 40 points or so. They had 2 wounds, armor 3 fixed, and 2 Skill 3/Strength 1attacks.

I used the demon lord stats for the Orion figure (my painting masterpiece to date), without flying and using nature magic.

Set-up
Both of us set up with bowmen on the flanks, his longbows against my sharp shooters. Weeach picked 3 objectives, needing 2 to win. The temple was an obvious objective, and was common for both of us. He had to kill my war god (Orion) and the Wood spirits, I had to kill his center heavy cav unit and take the woods on his rear left flank. Though that basically left the whole right side of the battlefield irrelevant for victory, we ended up fighting hard for it, as both of us hoped to roll up each others' flank and crush into the temple.

My left flank (notice I foolishly put both of my objective units together, ready to march onto the 3rd objective)

My right flank. The Dragon is actually being played as a Greater Wyvern.

Turn 1

He marches his center towards the temple, but is very timid with his cavalry on the right. My bowmen take up a good position on the left hill, where his long bowmen can't see them but they have a good view of the temple. Orion sees trouble on the right, where the spearmen and Wild Ones will be facing up to 3 cavalry units, so goes over to help. The Wild Ones move behind the Spearmen, ready to pounce out if the spearmen are attacked. The wyvern cautiously advances on the far right. My archers on the right win the battle with his longbowmen, putting them to flight.

Turn 2

The wyvern flies over the fleeing longbowmen, wanting to keep them broken but not willing to risk being charged by the heavy cavalry. He advances his cavalry on the right forward, obviously sensing the trap from the wild ones and orion.Orion moves in range to cast Strength on the spearmen, giving them a much better chance agains the heavy cavalry.

On the temple, the wood spirits and the medieval halberds don't quite engage, but the light cavalry does engage them on the flank. My archers fire into the halberds, but inflict few casualties. On the left, my spears engage his light infantry, while my hero on the griffon has his mount shot out from under him charging the longbows. Wolfgang's hero on a pegasus lands to finish killing him.

Turn 3

Combat is seriously engaged now. The treemen in the temple charge out to help the spearmen, who were hurt badly ont he previous turn. The halberds engage the wood spirits, and the bear moves to attack the halberds. Orion charges the rear of the light cavalry in the temple.

On the right, Wolfgang charges with his heavy cav (non-objective) into the spears, and is jumped by the Wild One pack. The wyvern bravely attacks the fleeing longbowmen, killing them.

The Spearmen are broken by the light infantry on the left, but fortunately the treemen prevent them from chasing the sylvan elves down. Orion turns out ot be kind of wussy in combat, but the wood spirits hold strong against the halberds. Though both take significant casualties, neither runs.

The strengthened spears and Wild Ones tear the heavy cavalry apart, taking few casualties in the process.

The woodelf trap is sprung on the heavy cavalry.

The battle in the temple is fierce, but no one runs away this turn.

Turn 4

The light infantry change facing to face the treemen on their flank, while the pegasus hero moves into the fray in the temple. On the right flank, the  wyvern bravely charges another broken unit, routing them off the board. The Wild Ones pack moves to the rear of the spearmen, ready to spring the same trap on the other heavy cavalry unit. That heavy cavalry unit is still torn by indecision, and again waits to select a target. The bowmen advance, as no targets are in range.

The Wood Lord again only kills one light cavalry. The woodspirits are wiped out in combat this turn, while on their left flank, the light infantry manage to kill a treeman, while taking few casaulties from bowfire and melee. The treemen break, and are run down by the light infantry.

The temple battle is escalated further.

Turn 5

The halberds turn to face the bear, while the Pegasus hero charges the Wood Lord. The mage that had the joined heavy cavalry also charges out to engage the Wood Lord, but is in turn charged by the Wild One pack. The rest of the heavy cavalry charges the wyvern, and are in turn charged by the spearmen.

The woodelf bowmen take a few casualties from the logbows, but don't break them. The sylvan elf archers pour fire into the light infantry, inflicting some wounds but again not breaking them.

Realizing the battle will be won or lost in the temple, the Wood Lord summons a treeman into battle. e survives the attacks of the mage and pegasus hero, but he again inflicts few wounds in return. The Wild One Pack leader manages to kill the mage's unicorn, but the mage survives. The halberds kill off the bear. The treeman breaks the light cavalry unit.

Meanwhile, the wyvern finds that he's not as good in combat against enemies that weren't already running away, inflicting 1 measly wound. Fortunately for him, he survives their assault with 1 wound left, and the spearmen unit breaks the heavy cavalry unit.

The wyvern learns that combat against people willing to fight really sucks. He vows to never fight against people who are facing him for as long as he lives, a vow which technically he will achieve.

Turn 6

The Wyvern now finds himself in his kind of fight, and pursues the fleeing heavy cavalry, driving them off the board. However, he is now in front of a lot of longbowmen, who avenge the deaths of their comrades.

The Sylvan elves really only have one chance now - clear the temple before the Wood Lord dies. The treeman moves to engage the halberds, keeping them off the Wood Lord. The wildones move into the fray, engaging the pegasus lord and the halberds. The spearmen move up to enter the temple, while the light infantry do so from the other side.

The Woodlord does some dage with a strngling thorn to the pegasus lord, while the wildone pack leader kills the mage, however, the pegasus lord gets the final wound on the wood lord, and the Medievals are victorious.

Conclusions:
The sylvan elves fought well, but the wood Lord fought very badly, and he probably would have been better off assaulting from the left flank, where he could have blocked the longbows with a summoned woods and would have probably broken the light infantry unit. The light infantry unit really did well, absorbing many rounds of bowfire and essentially breaking my left flank single handedly.

I very foolishly threw away my griffon riding hero early, by charging the longbow unit. Though the longbows did get lucky with 5 hits one 1's, the archer's hero and pegasus hero who was in range to support them would have been more than sufficent to kill him if he had not been hit at all.

Concentrating all of my objectives together was probably a bad idea as well - the wood lord would have been better off staying out of combat and casting support spells until later in the battle. Wolfgang kept his objective unit out of combat until he saw a near sure thing (the wyvern), and only the presence of the strength spell on the spearmen allowed them to move up to support the wyvern.
