Thane Morgan's Barbarian Army

Barbarians are probably the favorite army I own. They are definitely a mass army, countering my natural ability to blow combat rolls with the numbers needed to flank and force morale tests that way. They can be played as either evil or noble, allowing me a great deal of latitude in what creatures I can field with consistency. One week will be nature loving forest dwellers with Unicorns and Fae Dragons, the next as a Chaos-worshipping with Hydras and Minotaurs.
Altogether, this is about an 11000 point army. It can vary greatly though, as troops can be upgraded or downgraded pretty easily.
I give some specific tactical advice on barbarians armies elsewhere on the Player's Armies page.

Back Row: A group of 50 Archers, typically deployed in units of 20 or 15, sometimes as Scouts. These are flanked by 4 Ballista, my favorite artillery because they reload each turn. These are flanked by 6 Hatchling Wyverns. The hatchlings are among my favorite creatures, because of the feeling of power you get when those tail-strikes slaughter a bunch of cavalry in First Strike! They are really out-of-print dragons from Grenadier's Dragon Flight game. Next Row: 4 Units of 16 Cavalry, with a unit of Horse Archers leading them. The cavalry horses have two colors, the Palominos and the Appaloosa. This lets me split them between cavalry with sword, cavalry with lance, and elite cavalry, depending on what I feel like fielding. |

On the left side (near side here), are two units of Warriors led by a unit with Javelins and Shield. I usually field warriors in 5X5 RaF units each with a Hero. The Javelins are typically fielded in an 8 or 10 wide unit with a Great Hero and often a Shaman. On the Right (far) side are 3 units of Scouts with Javelins. I usually field them in 3 groups of 17 plus a Hero. They are really Republican Roman Velites, but the primitive look with wolf's hides makes the fit perfectly with my barbarians. |

Leading the army here are 4 Four-Horse Chariots. I usually place one or two heroes in each, playing them as medium chariots. They are fast and quite effective, though vulnerable to missile attacks, especially dragonfire. I typically deploy them in groups of two, allowing for significant ramming attacks without fear of hitting other chariots while still being flexible. The other nice thing about fielding them in twos is that if a chariot is destroyed, surviving crew can hop on the other medium chariot. Trailing the chariots are Cavalry leaders. I painted the horses to be distinctive, but I think the grey comes out too stark compared to the more earthy tones of the rest of the army. |

I still have an absurd number of troops to based and primed for this army: 50 Warriors, 30 Scouts, and 75 Javelins with Shields. It looks quite impressive already! |

I also want to put together some real elite cavalry, and at least one other unit of horse archers. |
