Thane Morgan's 28mm Demons

Back to Players' Armies

This is a fairly small army, but then demons are pretty expensive troops. The bulk of them are the DOOM figures made by Reaper several years ago, with some supplemental things. I have plans to expand this army, but for now I'm content.

From left to right, there are 21 Howlers, a Demon Princess flanked by two Cacodemons, leading a unit of 12 Demon Knights, which lead 6 Barons. On the far right are 21 Fire Demons.

Demon Forces

The really, really cool thing about a demon army is that you can use pretty much any oddball figures you want. Reaper Gargoyles or Bakarathi, GW Chaos, Clan War Shadowlands, Chronopia (and even Warzone) Demons, Inferno 15mm, etc. Its all up to you, so long as you can plausibly fit the stats to the model.

Howlers

These are Pink Demon figures from the old DOOM computer game, produced by Reaper many years ago. They are functional as cavalry units I get around to getting some cavalry. I usually run them in groups of 7, 10 or 21 depending on the game.

I love glowing red eyes :)

Fire Demons

These are obviously DOOM imps. I color coded the flaming spheres to make tracking units easier, and also as an experiment in making flames of different color. Washes with dry brushing over top is a great combination.

I wish I had altered their poses before I painted them, but it is too late now. Somewhere, 7 more of these hide in my boxes of unpainted figures.

Barons

These were also called Barons in DOOM, and they are quite nasty in AoA. Base 4, 3 wounds, 3 fixed armor and the ability to throw magic bolts naturally make them a tough opponent.

Again, it would have been nice to alter some of their poses before painting, but the idea just didn't occur to me then - I was too excited to have even got them :)

Demon Knights

These are Void Guard from Clan War. I could never decide whether to make them Undead or Demon, so painted them so they could be either. The effort into making their robes dark and sparkly was probably wasted - in everything but sunlight, everyone thinks they are just black. The silver-purple weapon blades are a nice touch though.

I have 8 more of these to do still, but am afraid I'll never get close to matching their colors to these. It is the down side to mixing most of your own colors from about 20 basic colors.

These are great on the battlefield, with Armor 4 Fixed they can really frustrate your opponent.

Cacodemons

These are bizarre Reaper figures, the Conjunctivus. I tried something very different for their armor - trying to show their plates just barely holding in the fires within them. It came close to working, and still looks quite cool. I think I needed to do a bit of dry brushing within the armor cracks to make the glow come out from between them a bit more.

Players could use the two Doom figures that were floating balls, or a beholder or any big floating thing that looks like it could reach out and touch someone with a magical attack. Actually, just a drifting eyeball with trailing nerves might be pretty cool for these too. Or maybe just gruesome.

Demon Princess

You know, if not for the huge clawed wings, horns, reddish-orange skin and glowing eyes, she'd actually be pretty cute. Well, that and the head collection she apparently feels the need to drag everywhere.

She is from the Court of Abyst set from Reaper - I have 4 other demons of varying size still being painted. But they aren't real necessary at this stage, I don't have that big of an army, and the cacodemons with her give enough magic options already. Still, the others look just as good, so I will have to finish them soon.
