The Hellscape

I've wanted to do a Hellscape for years. I think it started back in the days of the original Doom computer game, running through lava and twisted, blasted, and demented terrain. Though not completed, it has worked so well that I'm putting it here before everything is done. More will be added in the future.
The base was always the problem. An ash colored cloth is ok, but it didn't really capture the mood. Painting the cloth looks tacky. And it is very hard to match elevated features color and texture to a cloth base. Styrofoam terrain boards are difficult to store and transport, and are fragile in game play.
Repairing dog damage to a wall showed me the power of wood putty. Its durable, workable, holds a texture, and is quick to apply. It dries to fairly light weight. And when put on hardboard, it flexes with the board without cracking. I decided to use it for everything, so everything would have the same texture, and be durable.
It is not invincible though. It resists bumps and drops, but it can get smashed with enough effort. It repairs easily.
I still need to do the equivalent of a forest or overgrown terrain. I've no decided what it should look like yet though. I've tried several different items, but nothing looked Hellish enough.

Click on the images below to see more details about their construction. Almost everything used the same technique for applying the putty, texturizing it, painting it, and adding lava. This process is fully explained on the Terrain Boards page.
